Managing Criminal Justice Technology
As a Criminal Justice manager, are you concerned about:

Making the right technology decisions?
Dealing with software vendors?
Leaving large purchasing decisions to your technology staff (if you are fortunate enough to have a staff)?

These issues have become everyday problems for the Criminal Justice executive and senior manager as information technology (IT) applications become ever more prevalent in today’s dynamic workplace. In response to this climate of change, The Center for Society, Law and Justice (CSLJ) at the University of New Orleans is pleased to present the Managing Criminal Justice Technology into the 21st Century seminar, in partnership with the U. S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA).

The primary focus of the 2 1/2 day seminar is to empower the attendee with the basic ability to deal with the new realities of the information age. The seminar will help the participant navigate the intimidating maze of the IT implementation process by offering fundamental advice in areas such as strategic planning, IT decision making, understanding network systems and evaluating basic components prior to purchase.

Who Should Attend?

Senior executives and upper level managers responsible for assessing, implementing and evaluating Criminal Justice IT applications will find the program very valuable. In addition, key decision makers within the organizations with operational, purchasing, or technical responsibilities will also find the program informative. The program is designed with a special emphasis toward BJA Grantees, but others from all areas of the Criminal Justice field are urged to attend.

Seminar Aims and Goals

The primary aim of the seminar is simply to help Criminal Justice executives and senior level managers improve their capacity to deal with today’s technology. This seminar will help prepare them for the daunting challenges of the future. The educational goals addressed through the use of adult learning techniques during the seminar include:

Why You Should Attend?

This program offers the participant invaluable base line knowledge in applying tactics and developmental systems to help with the management oversight of new Criminal Justice technologies. In a busy world with multiple responsibilities, senior managers often abdicate decisions to those they perceive as more qualified (i.e., vendors and technical staff).

We all know knowledge is power. This seminar educates the senior manager to effectively participate and execute oversight of Criminal Justice technologies. The senior manager will leave the seminar with a greater sense of technology and how to manage it within an organization. Although the seminar is not specifically designed for IT specialists, they may benefit from attendance.

The seminar begins with the “big picture” and progresses to strategic planning and implementation. During the 2 1/2 days, adult learning techniques are utilized that include interactive discussions of vendor relationships and the need to avoid being “techie captured”. The seminar also offers illustrations of national “best practices” and hands-on experience through a multiple phase practical exercise and IT procedure development discussions.

How You Can Attend?

The seminar is presented tuition free at various sites throughout the United States. It is held at locations central to BJA grant recipients and is open to all Criminal Justice managers.
